Miloš Hrma, a young apprentice train dispatcher at a small station in German-occupied Czechoslovakia, is more preoccupied with losing his virginity to his girlfriend Máša and enduring his colleagues' teasing than with the war raging around him. His sexual anxieties and a botched suicide attempt play out alongside the station staff's petty rivalries, until a chance to strike a real blow against a German munitions train forces Miloš into an act of quiet, decisive courage. Jiří Menzel's bittersweet coming-of-age comedy turns wartime resistance into something achieved almost by accident, undercutting heroism with everyday awkwardness right up to its sudden final act.
