Spanning Napoleon's invasion of Russia, the film follows illegitimate nobleman's son Pierre Bezukhov, idealistic Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, and the vivacious young Natasha Rostova as their lives intertwine through Russian high society, war, love, and loss. Andrei goes to war against Napoleon and is presumed dead, Natasha's engagement to him collapses after a near-elopement with another man, and Pierre's own disastrous marriage leaves him searching for meaning amid Russia's mounting national crisis. Sergei Bondarchuk's four-part epic, filmed with tens of thousands of Soviet Army extras, builds to Moscow's occupation and the survivors' hard-won reckoning with what the war has cost them.
