In an unnamed Mediterranean country modeled on 1960s Greece, a leftist deputy is fatally struck down by right-wing thugs after a political rally, in what authorities immediately rule an accident. A dogged young magistrate, initially expected to rubber-stamp the cover-up, instead digs into the case and uncovers a conspiracy reaching into the highest levels of the military and police. Costa-Gavras's furious political thriller follows the investigation's inconvenient triumph, only for a bitter epilogue to reveal how thoroughly the guilty escape consequences once the ruling junta reasserts control.
