A recently promoted Roman police inspector murders his mistress and then inserts himself into the investigation of his own crime, deliberately planting obvious clues while steering suspicion toward other suspects, including the victim's husband and a student radical. Convinced his authority makes him untouchable, he grows increasingly reckless, all but daring his subordinates to arrest him as a way of proving his power is absolute. Elio Petri's satire follows his mounting self-destructive arrogance as a portrait of institutional corruption immune to consequence.
