A group of French bourgeois friends and the ambassador of a fictional South American country repeatedly try, and repeatedly fail, to sit down together for a proper dinner, thwarted each time by absurd interruptions ranging from a restaurant owner's wake to a full military ambush. Luis Buñuel interweaves these thwarted gatherings with surreal dream sequences from various characters, blurring the line between the group's waking rituals and their subconscious anxieties. The film never resolves into a single finished dinner, instead using the characters' endless, oblivious return to social ritual as a satire of bourgeois complacency.
