A film crew struggles through the chaotic production of a mediocre melodrama called "Meet Pamela," juggling an aging leading man, a fragile Italian star, a volatile young heartthrob, and a British actress recovering from a breakdown. François Truffaut, who also plays the beleaguered director Ferrand, weaves together the on- and off-set entanglements of cast and crew into a warmly self-aware love letter to the compromises and small miracles of filmmaking itself. The film's title refers to the technique of shooting night scenes in daylight, a fitting metaphor for the illusion-making at its core.
