In the seaside village of Borgo San Giuliano during 1930s Fascist Italy, adolescent Titta comes of age amid a parade of eccentric neighbors, family squabbles, and communal rituals, from a springtime bonfire to a fog-shrouded ocean-liner sighting. Federico Fellini's loosely autobiographical film moves through the changing seasons of a single year, mixing broad comedy with wistful nostalgia as it captures the town's collective sexual fantasies, provincial pretensions, and susceptibility to Mussolini's posturing. Held together less by plot than by memory, the film builds an affectionate, satirical portrait of a community too comfortable in its own illusions to grow up.
