In 1915, a small, complacent French colonial outpost in Cameroon is jolted out of its leisurely isolation by news that France is at war with Germany, whose colony sits just across the border. Eager to prove their patriotism despite having no real stake in the European conflict, the settlers organize a bumbling, ill-equipped military campaign against their German neighbors, escalating a comfortable rivalry into real violence. Jean-Jacques Annaud's directorial debut plays the colonists' warmongering as farce that curdles into a sharp indictment of colonial arrogance on both sides.
