At a fishing club's annual dinner in late-Franco-era Spain, well-heeled members serve and eat visibly rotten trout rather than admit anything is wrong with the catch. José Luis García Sánchez uses the absurd dinner-party setup as a satire of middle-class denial and conformity in the dictatorship's final years. The dark comedy plays out almost entirely around a single table, letting the diners' willful blindness stand in for a broader social complacency.
