University student Göran spends a summer at his uncle's farm and falls instantly in love with local girl Kerstin, but her strict, religious relatives and the town's disapproving vicar force the couple to hide their romance. Their brief, idyllic summer together is shadowed by Göran's looming return to university and the community's rigid moral judgment of their relationship. Arne Mattsson's film became internationally notorious for its nude scenes, which scandalized audiences even as the story itself mourns a love destroyed by small-town repression.
