In 1958 Moscow, three young women share a dormitory while chasing different visions of happiness: factory worker Katerina, marriage-minded Lyudmila, and the more grounded Antonina. Katerina falls for a television cameraman who fathers her child and then abandons her, leaving her to raise their daughter alone while building a career. Twenty years later, now a successful factory director, she meets a warm-hearted metalworker named Gosha but conceals her status from him, and when the truth comes out it nearly derails their romance before a hard-won reconciliation.
