In early-1900s Uppsala, siblings Fanny and Alexander live a rich theatrical family life until their father dies and their mother remarries a severe, authoritarian bishop. The children are moved into his household, where Alexander's vivid imagination and storytelling bring him cruel punishment, and the family becomes desperate to free them. A rescue is staged with the help of relatives, culminating in a fire that kills the bishop, after which the family reunites and Alexander is left haunted by visions of the man who tormented him.
