At a world chess championship in Geneva, an aging Soviet grandmaster with a failing heart faces off against a younger rival who defected from the USSR years earlier. As the match wears on, both men are worn down by forces beyond the board: the Soviet delegation's political pressure and surveillance, and the defector's own crumbling personal life. Their contest becomes as much a psychological and ideological battle as a game of chess, with neither side able to claim an easy victory.
