In a remote, devout Danish coastal village, elderly sisters Martine and Filippa have spent their lives tending their late father's austere religious community, having each given up a chance at love and a life beyond the village. Babette, a French refugee fleeing political turmoil, arrives and works as their housekeeper for fourteen years. After winning a lottery, she spends her entire winnings on an elaborate French feast for the congregation, and the meal's sensuous generosity quietly overwhelms the villagers' guarded piety, revealing Babette to have once been a celebrated Parisian chef.
