In 1930s Berlin, young David Singer comes of age as the son of a rabbi, watching his family and community come under mounting threat as Nazi persecution escalates. His brother Leo tries to hide his Jewish identity by wearing a Nazi uniform, while their father insists on pride in the face of humiliation, even after his synagogue is burned. As the campaign against Berlin's Jews intensifies, David works to raise money for the family's escape to Mandate Palestine, watching the city's Jewish community disappear around him.
