A woodcutter, a priest, and a bystander take shelter from the rain at the ruined Rashomon gate, recounting the baffling trial testimony surrounding a samurai's murder and his wife's assault in a forest. Four witnesses, including the accused bandit, the wife, the dead samurai speaking through a medium, and the woodcutter himself, each tell a contradictory version of events that flatters their own conduct. Akira Kurosawa's landmark film uses the clashing accounts to question whether objective truth is even possible when every witness reshapes reality to preserve their own self-image.
