Renato Castellani's adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy follows the star-crossed young lovers of feuding Verona families, cast largely with inexperienced actors and shot on authentic Italian locations for a naturalistic, unglamorized take on the doomed romance. Laurence Harvey's Romeo and newcomer Susan Shentall's Juliet fall instantly in love despite their families' violent rivalry, setting in motion the secret marriage and tragic misunderstandings that doom them both. Castellani's version leans into period detail and location authenticity over theatrical polish, earning acclaim abroad despite disappointing box office.
