In a devout rural Danish family, patriarch Morten's three sons each embody a different relationship to faith: the eldest has lost his; the middle son believes himself to be the second coming of Christ after a religious crisis; and the youngest wants to marry into a rival, stricter sect that Morten disdains. As a family tragedy pushes everyone's beliefs to their breaking point, the seemingly deluded middle son's unwavering faith becomes the film's central, startling test of whether miracles are still possible. Carl Theodor Dreyer's austere drama builds to one of cinema's most famous and controversial acts of faith.
