The second chapter of Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy follows young Apu and his mother as they relocate to the holy city of Varanasi after his father's death, and later to a village where Apu's academic gifts pull him toward a wider world his mother can't follow. As Apu grows into adolescence and wins a scholarship to study in Calcutta, his ambitions increasingly separate him from his aging, lonely mother, who remains behind in the village. Ray's unsentimental portrait of a widening gulf between mother and son was criticized in India for its unconventional emotional restraint but won acclaim internationally for its honesty.
