Matsugoro, an illiterate but big-hearted rickshaw puller nicknamed "Wild Matsu" for his hot temper, becomes an unlikely father figure to a young boy after the child's father dies, forming a bond with the boy and his widowed mother that shapes the rest of his life. Though never able to cross the class divide to express his growing feelings for the widow, Matsu devotes himself to the boy's upbringing from the sidelines, watching him grow into a young man while his own rough, working-class life continues in the shadows. Hiroshi Inagaki's remake of his own earlier film follows Matsu's quiet, self-sacrificing devotion across decades.
