In Nazi-occupied Genoa, small-time con man Emanuele Bardone is coerced by German forces into impersonating a captured Resistance leader, General Della Rovere, in order to infiltrate a prison and identify other partisans. As Bardone plays the role among genuine resistance fighters who look to him for leadership and courage, the impersonation gradually becomes real, and he finds himself transforming into the hero he was only pretending to be. Roberto Rossellini's drama follows Bardone's unexpected moral awakening to its ultimate test: whether he'll betray the real resistance leader to save himself, or die as the man he's become.
