Two mismatched, cowardly Italian soldiers, the scheming Roman Oreste and the gruff Milanese Giovanni, meet during World War I conscription and forge an uneasy friendship built entirely on their shared desire to avoid danger and survive the war unscathed. Bouncing between training, combat, and rare leave, the two witness the catastrophic Italian defeat at Caporetto and are assigned as expendable relay runners, the army's most dangerous job, precisely because they're considered its least capable soldiers. Mario Monicelli's tragicomedy plays their cowardice for laughs until the war's grim reality forces an unexpectedly sobering final test of courage.
