After France falls to Germany in 1940, two French soldiers, Roger and his companions, are conscripted as forced laborers on a German farm under the STO program, becoming unexpectedly entangled in the lives, and affections, of the German family holding them. As the war drags on, loyalties blur between captor and captive, complicating any clean return to the men's old lives once liberation finally comes. André Cayatte's drama follows the messy, human aftermath of occupation from the rare vantage of the conscripted laborers themselves rather than the resistance or the front lines.
