In an ornate baroque hotel, a man approaches a woman insisting they met and fell in love the year before at a similar resort, and that she asked him to wait a year before running away together; she insists she has never met him. A second man, possibly her husband, repeatedly asserts quiet dominance over the pair by beating the first man at a game of Nim, as the three drift through the hotel's identical corridors and manicured gardens. Alain Resnais's puzzle-box film deliberately never resolves whether the affair happened, was imagined, or is happening now, using disorienting repetition and contradiction as its entire subject.
