Ivan, a 12-year-old boy orphaned when German forces killed his family, works as a scout for the Soviet Army, slipping across enemy lines on dangerous reconnaissance missions that no child should be asked to undertake. Between missions, sympathetic officers try in vain to send him away from the front to safety, but Ivan, hollowed out by grief and hatred, refuses to abandon his one-man war of vengeance. Andrei Tarkovsky's debut feature intercuts Ivan's brutal wartime reality with tender, dreamlike flashbacks to the peaceful childhood the war has destroyed.
