In the industrial wasteland surrounding Ravenna, Giuliana, still fragile after a car accident, drifts through her days unable to find footing in a world of petrochemical plants, toxic landscapes, and her own numbing anxiety. Her husband Ugo's visiting business associate Corrado, restless in his own way, becomes drawn to Giuliana's fragility, offering a connection that never quite resolves her dislocation from her surroundings. Michelangelo Antonioni's first color film uses industrial Italy's toxic, alien beauty as the external expression of Giuliana's fractured inner state.
