Two sisters take opposite paths toward the same feminist and political convictions: Juliane becomes a journalist campaigning for women's rights, while Marianne joins a violent left-wing terrorist group. When Marianne abandons her young son and her husband dies, Juliane reluctantly takes over as the boy's guardian, even as she keeps visiting her estranged sister in prison. After Marianne dies in custody under disputed circumstances officially ruled a suicide, Juliane becomes convinced she was murdered and tries in vain to draw public attention to the case. Years later, following an attack connected to his mother's notoriety, Marianne's now-grown son is finally reconciled with his aunt.
