A film crew shooting a black-and-white science-fiction picture on the Portuguese coast is forced to halt production when they run out of money and film stock. Stranded together in an empty hotel, the cast and crew drift into idle conversation and introspection while waiting for word from their absent producer, Gordon. Frustrated by the silence, director Friedrich Munro travels to Los Angeles to track Gordon down himself, only to find him hiding out in a camper van, on the run from gangsters he owes money to.
