Carmen, a young woman involved in a gang of thieves, borrows her uncle's seaside apartment to plan a bank robbery, while a string quartet is heard rehearsing Beethoven throughout the film. During the heist she falls for Joseph, a bank guard, and the two begin a turbulent love affair even as Carmen warns him that loving her will destroy him. After Joseph is arrested and later acquitted, he reunites with Carmen, but her gang increasingly shuts him out of their plans. The film ends violently during a botched kidnapping, with Joseph confronting Carmen and a shot fired between them.
