In 1946 Poland, a war widow named Emilia scrapes by baking cookies to sell while caring for her dying mother. Her life changes when she meets Norman, an American soldier stationed there to help exhume the graves of Allied airmen, and the two form a tender, halting romance despite the language barrier between them. When Norman is ordered home, Emilia is faced with a chance to emigrate with him but gives up her only spot on a smuggler's passage to a friend instead. Decades later, an elderly Emilia, now living in a convent, receives news of an inheritance from Norman in America but collapses before she can reach him.
