The film opens with the discovery of a young drifter, Mona Bergeron, found frozen to death in a ditch in rural France, then reconstructs her final winter through the recollections of people who crossed her path. Mona survives by hitchhiking, camping, and taking odd jobs, having abandoned a conventional life in Paris in search of total freedom. As winter deepens, she loses what little she has, including her tent, and grows increasingly desperate and isolated. The film closes as it began, with Mona succumbing to cold and exhaustion in a vineyard.
