Set in occupied France during the winter of 1943-44, the film follows Julien Quentin, a boy at a Catholic boarding school, who at first resents a new classmate, Jean Bonnet. Julien gradually discovers that Bonnet is actually a Jewish boy named Jean Kippelstein, hidden at the school by its compassionate headmaster, and the two become close friends. When the Gestapo raids the school, an inadvertent glance from Julien reveals Bonnet's hiding place, leading to the arrest of the headmaster and the Jewish students. An epilogue reveals their deaths in the camps, with an older Julien reflecting that he will never forget that day.
