In the Yorkshire town of Wetherby, schoolteacher Jean Travers hosts a dinner party attended by a mysterious young stranger, John Morgan. The next morning Morgan returns unannounced and fatally shoots himself at her kitchen table, sending Jean and her circle of friends searching for answers. Through interlocking flashbacks the film uncovers the histories of Jean, her guests, and Morgan himself, ultimately leading Jean to a reckoning with her own long-buried disappointments and losses.
