A successful but creatively hollow Soviet playwright, Kim Yesenin, travels to the historic town of Suzdal in search of inspiration, privately tormented by how conformist and mediocre his work has become. There he meets Sasha, a museum guide who bluntly tells him what she thinks of his plays, and becomes a secret witness to her tearful goodbye to a dissident lover emigrating to the United States. Shaken, Yesenin crashes his car while driving back to Moscow at night, and the film ends on his unresolved fate as he loses consciousness mid-phone call to Sasha.
