Self-absorbed car dealer Charlie Babbitt returns home upon his estranged father's death expecting an inheritance, only to learn that the family fortune has instead been left in trust to an older brother he never knew existed. He discovers that his brother Raymond is an autistic savant living in a mental institution and takes him on a cross-country road trip while scheming to gain control of the money. As the journey unfolds, Charlie comes to understand and love Raymond, ultimately choosing their relationship over his father's inheritance.
