In early-1950s West Berlin, a destitute Polish refugee named Pauline, unable to care for her illegitimate baby, sells the child to Anna John, a childless woman desperate to be a mother. As the arrangement threatens to unravel amid jealousy, guilt, and the harsh realities of postwar poverty, both women are drawn into a spiraling conflict over the child neither can fully claim. Robert Siodmak's adaptation of Gerhart Hauptmann's play transplants a tenement tragedy into the rubble of postwar Germany.
