Set in the isolated Rocky Mountain town of Dogville, near an abandoned silver mine, the film opens with a narrator introducing its 15 residents. Through the perspective of Tom Edison Jr. (Paul Bettany), an idealistic philosopher who organizes meetings on "moral rearmament," the townsfolk are depicted as quaint but flawed. Tom aspires to replace his elderly physician father as the community's moral leader.
