In postwar Rome, Antonio Ricci finally lands a job pasting up posters, which requires a bicycle, and his wife pawns the family's bedsheets to redeem his. On his first day it is stolen, and Antonio and his young son Bruno search the city for the thief, until, in desperation, he is tempted to steal one himself.
