Stan works long shifts in a slaughterhouse in the Watts district of Los Angeles, and the drudgery leaves him sleepless and numb to his wife's affection. Episodes of daily life in the neighbourhood, children playing in vacant lots and friends trying to buy a car engine, add up to a portrait of the community.
