In 1905, sailors aboard the Russian battleship Potemkin revolt against their officers after being ordered to eat maggot-ridden meat. When the townspeople of Odessa gather to honour a sailor killed in the mutiny, tsarist troops massacre them on the city's harbour steps, and the fleet is sent to crush the rebel ship.
