In episodes spanning the early 15th century, the icon painter Andrei Rublev travels through a Russia torn by Tatar raids, famine and the cruelty of princes. After witnessing a massacre he stops painting and takes a vow of silence, until a young bell-maker's bold casting of a great bell restores his faith.
