In a remote Castilian village in 1940, just after the Spanish Civil War, seven-year-old Ana sees Frankenstein at a travelling cinema show. Her older sister tells her the monster is a spirit she can summon, and Ana goes looking for it, finding a wounded Republican soldier hiding in an abandoned barn.
