In 16th-century Japan, during a civil war, the potter Genjūrō and his brother-in-law Tōbei leave their wives behind to seek their fortunes, one in the market and the other as a samurai. Genjūrō is seduced by the mysterious Lady Wakasa, who turns out to be a ghost, while their wives suffer the cost of their ambition.
