In Victorian London, the surgeon Frederick Treves finds Joseph Merrick, a severely deformed man exhibited as a freak-show attraction, and brings him to the London Hospital. Merrick, thought to be an imbecile, turns out to be intelligent and gentle, and becomes a celebrity of high society while his former keeper schemes to get him back.
