After escaping a German POW transport in northern Italy, British Lieutenant Halliday and American Sergeant Braddock join forces and flee toward neutral Switzerland, aided along the way by sympathetic civilians, partisans, and a network of refugees fleeing the collapsing Axis occupation. Their growing group, which comes to include a Polish tailor, a Belgrade factory worker, and a distraught mother separated from her husband, must cross mountains and checkpoints together to reach safety. Leopold Lindtberg's war drama, filmed with a mostly non-professional cast just after the war's end, frames the escape as a testament to collective solidarity across nationalities.
