Isak Borg, a cold, self-satisfied 78-year-old physician, drives from Stockholm to Lund to receive an honorary doctorate, accompanied by his estranged daughter-in-law Marianne, who is contemplating leaving his son. Along the way, vivid dreams, memories, and chance encounters with hitchhikers force Isak to confront the emotional distance and quiet cruelties that have defined his long life. Ingmar Bergman's road movie turns a single day's journey into a reckoning with mortality, regret, and the possibility of late-life tenderness.
