A middle-aged Swiss pastor adopts a blind orphan girl, Gertrude, raising her into a beautiful young woman he comes to realize, to his own shame, that he has fallen in love with, even as his adopted son Jacques falls for her too despite his own engagement. When an operation miraculously restores Gertrude's sight, she is confronted for the first time with the full reality of the tangled, compromised feelings surrounding her, and with a truth about the pastor's own moral blindness. Jean Delannoy's adaptation of André Gide's novella turns a story of religious devotion into a quiet tragedy of self-deception.
