In Nazi-occupied Rome in 1944, Resistance leader Giorgio Manfredi evades the Gestapo with the help of fellow partisan Francesco and a courageous Catholic priest, Don Pietro, who risks his life smuggling money and messages for the underground. As the Nazis and their collaborators close in, Francesco's fiancée Pina becomes swept into the desperate fight to protect the men she loves. Roberto Rossellini's landmark neorealist drama, shot on the streets of a barely liberated Rome with a mix of professional and non-professional actors, captures the raw, unresolved trauma of occupation just as it was ending.
