As German forces push toward an unnamed Soviet city on the Volga clearly modeled on Stalingrad, newly appointed General Muravyov rejects his predecessor's plan to retreat and instead orders an active, patient defense designed to exhaust the overconfident enemy before a decisive counterattack. Balancing the demands of command with his reunion with his wife, also serving in the army, Muravyov must out-think a German general who has underestimated the Red Army's resolve. Fridrikh Ermler's wartime drama dramatizes the strategic turning point of the Eastern Front as a triumph of patient, disciplined leadership over enemy hubris.
