American pulp novelist Holly Martins arrives in post-war, Allied-occupied Vienna to take a job from his old friend Harry Lime, only to learn Lime has just died in a mysterious accident. Digging into the suspicious circumstances of the death and falling for Lime's grief-stricken girlfriend Anna, Martins uncovers a much darker truth about his friend's actual fate and criminal activities amid the ruined, zone-divided city.
